With a new survey from Drayton finding that over 70% of the 2,000 adults interviewed in September 2022 believe they’re wasting money on energy bills due to not fully understanding their heating, the guide has been created to help provide homeowners with practical advice and support to best manage rising energy costs this winter.
This includes information on the benefits of low-flow temperatures, things to ask their heating engineer and top energy saving tips, as well as a look forward at what future heating systems might look like as we move towards becoming a net-zero country.
The guide also looks at how upgrading heating controls can make a significant impact on energy savings.
For example, swapping from a basic thermostat to a smart multi-zone heating control with smart modes, such as Wiser, can help homeowners save up to £575 a year on their energy bills.
The survey also found that 41% of respondants don't confidently understand how heating works, which means that three quarters of them think they waste money on bills because of it.
There is also much confusion about the workings of the systems themselves, which leads to 49% actively avoiding changing boiler settings for fear of breaking the system, and over a third of them rather leaving the heating on than work out a timer. Four in ten have given up changing heating settings when faced with a symbol they don't understand.
Remi Volpe, Managing Director at Drayton, commented: “With our survey finding that 62% of homeowners have tried and failed to personalise their heating system to suit their household needs, it’s clear that there are huge opportunities for heating engineers to be upgrading their customers to easier-to-use heating controls.
“For example, with Wiser, homeowners can turn their heating on and off, manage schedules, and boost their heating all via a few taps on the Wiser Home app.
“With so many homeowners concerned about the rising energy costs this winter, it was important for us to make them aware of their options and identify areas in their home that they can work with heating engineers to improve.
“We hope that as well as helping to benefit homeowners, this campaign will also help to benefit heating engineers by increasing sales leads and also provide them with a resource that they can use to help educate customers.”
